About MACAELA

Macaela Gilson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of Missouri.  She completed the Master of Social Work program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a concentration in Advanced Clinical Mental Health.  Macaela has experience working with adolescents and adults focusing on depression, anxiety, body image concerns, identity exploration (including LGBTQ+), life transitions, relationships, trauma/PTSD, and more.

Macaela’s approach focuses on self-compassion as a means to encourage healing within and without, believing that inwardly-directed compassion is a critical tool in fostering outward healthy relationships.   She respects the dignity and uniqueness of each individual, and works collaboratively to focus on strengths as well as areas for growth with the recognition of shared humanity as a foundation for the therapeutic relationship.

From Macaela:

“It’s so common to the human experience to find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, self-critical, anxious, uncertain, or lonely.  When we do, it’s all the more common to want to avoid looking at what’s transpiring for us out of fear for what we might find.  However, not looking tends to mean that we’re bound to misunderstand our experiences, and over time, doing so adds another layer of distress, disconnection, and dissatisfaction — we are suffering and by refusing to look at our suffering, we suffer more.  I can help!  Together, we’ll create an honest, non-judgmental space in which you can begin to look inward, to listen to the deep strength and internal wisdom you already possess.”

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are
